HAMILTON, ON (March 5, 2013) – Jan Chappel, Senior Technical Specialist at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, will speak at two upcoming conferences, on the topics of workplace bullying, vulnerable workers and evaluating literature and research data.
Workplace bullying can unfortunately be an issue in all types of workplaces. Ms. Chappel’s presentation will focus on the steps that co-workers, supervisors, managers and the organization as a whole can take to respond appropriately to bullying. She will also include the key components of creating and maintaining an effective workplace bullying or violence prevention program, including specific risk assessment and control strategies.

Vulnerable workers—young, new, aging, plus migrant/immigrant workers—are disproportionately employed in physically demanding or hazardous jobs. This puts them at higher risk for workplace injuries and illnesses. Ms. Chappel will discuss how to implement a health and safety training and orientation program that covers worker health and safety rights and responsibilities, hazard recognition, assessment and control, as well as the importance of a tailored worker orientation program and training approaches for these audiences.

Ms. Chappel will discuss how properly appraising chemical and toxicological research data, in particular, can help make informed, more reliable chemical classification decisions.
